Evaluation Day

At Second Home Boarding, our goal is to have your pet feel at home, not stressed. It’s because of this we find it very important to have your pet visit us for a half-day evaluation before their first play day or boarding stay is booked. This allows us to evaluate the personality of your pet and make note of how much play time and rest your pet will need throughout the day, as well as what type of activities they enjoy most. If we feel your pet isn’t a good fit at our facility, we will help guide you in what may be the best set up for your pet elsewhere.

Dog and Cat Behavior

We expect all boarders and daycare pets to be friendly with people. We don’t, however, expect them to all get along with all other pets. That’s why we provide individual play sessions for dogs that don’t get along with other dogs and group play sessions for those that do! We welcome both personalities of pets because we believe both types may enjoy visiting someplace new and having some extra fun! Cat play times are always individual play sessions unless they have a family member with them.

Bedding and Toys

Please do not bring any bedding, toys, bones, or bowls to Second Home. We have plenty of beds, blankets, and towels to supply each pet with an abundance of fluff. We also have a large array of toys and an ample supply of bowls. We cannot guarantee that your belongings will get back to you in the same shape you left them, plus they could get lost among the many loads of laundry we go through each day. Pets often will show behaviors that aren’t seen at home, such as shredding and destroying bedding and toys, as well as urinating or defecating on them. This can be due to anxiety from being away from home. We do everything we can to reduce stress while your pet is with us, but we can’t always relieve it 100%. Bones and chews should be given to pets only when they are being monitored. Since we can’t monitor every pet individually all the time in their suites, we do not allow bones and chews at our facility.

Health of Your Pet (we accept dogs and cats that are 12 weeks and older)

All dogs are required to be up to date on the following vaccinations:

-Rabies

-Distemper/Parvovirus

-Bordetella

All cats are required to be up to date on the following vaccinations:

-Rabies

-FVRCP (Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia)

Vaccination records need to be downloaded to your pet’s chart or emailed to us at contact@secondhomeboarding.com before their visit.

We expect to be informed of any health conditions your pet has before their boarding stay or play day. For example: skin issues that already exist, seizures, diabetes, G.I. issues, eye conditions, upper respiratory issues, food allergies, etc. This information will help us determine whether it’s appropriate for your pet to be at our facility as we want to take the best care of them. Some medical issues are best managed at a veterinary clinic that boards pets.

Second Home does its best to lessen stress on pets while they are with us, but we may still occasionally see episodes of diarrhea, loss of appetite, and vomiting. We will do our best to keep these symptoms at bay and will contact you if we notice any symptoms during their stay. If at any point we feel there is a medical emergency, we will try to get in touch with you to discuss our concern and/or take your pet to a veterinarian to be treated. Any veterinary treatment will be added to the bill and should be paid at time of pick up.

It is recommended that your pet be spayed or neutered by 14 months of age, but it’s not a requirement at our facility. It will be our discretion if your intact pet needs individual play sessions or not. Intact males and females can often cause conflict with other dogs in the play yard which is NOT what we want for any pet. Safety is our number one priority, and we must all remember that animals are still animals--their behaviors can be unpredictable, but there are certain things we can do to prevent unpredictability and harm.

Fleas

It is recommended that your dog or cat be on a flea preventative before their stay with us, but is not required. We inspect every pet each day to make sure no fleas are seen. If fleas are found on your pet during their stay, they will be given a flea medication to prevent any further spreading to your pet and throughout our facility. There is a charge if your pet has to be treated for fleas by us during their stay.

Leash Safety

Every dog that comes in to our facility should already be on leash or in a carrier. All cats should be in a carrier. No pet should EVER be off leash when checking in or checking out of boarding or their play day. No cat should come in being held in your arms--it only takes a split second for a cat to get scared and try to escape. If a dog is in your arms, they still must have a leash on as they could jump from your arms unexpectedly. A loose pet can cause an altercation—the worst-case scenario is a dog or cat escaping from the building and being on the loose outside (a pet owner and boarding facilities worst nightmare!). Having your pets on lease gives you full control of your pet to avoid any issues around other pets that may be at the front desk at the same time.

Play Yard Safety

During your pet’s stay, they will be rotated throughout the day between our play yard to run around and their suites to rest. A team member will always be with your pet during a play time whether it be a group or individual session. All group play sessions are held in small groups which decreases the possibility for negative play. This system allows our team members to spend more time with your pet, and it is easier to keep an eye on all dogs that are playing with each other--safety is our main priority!

Food

We highly recommend you bring your pet’s food with you for their boarding stay. It’s ideal for pets to remain on their regular diet while boarding as changes can cause stomach upset which can lead to diarrhea or vomiting. If you forget to bring your pet’s food with you, then we are happy to provide food for them. The food we keep on hand is Hill’s Sensitive Stomach for both dogs and cats.
